Tebex: Rolling out Pay by Bank across key European markets

Tebex

Challenges at the Tebex checkout

Tebex, part of Overwolf, powers payments for thousands of game servers, modders and creators worldwide, helping them monetise digital content directly through branded web stores.

With that scale comes greater payment complexity. As Tebex grows, the team is actively optimising checkout performance, reducing friction and maximising earnings for creators. While legacy payment methods like PayPal, SOFORT, and cards still play a significant role, they also introduce limitations around cost, speed, and reliability, all key areas Tebex wanted to improve.

In gaming, we're seeing the growth in paying players start to slow. That makes maximising every sale even more important.

1. Improving success rates across markets

With a growing mobile and international user base, Tebex wanted to further optimise authorisation rates for payments. False declines, additional fraud checks, and expired card details were introducing unnecessary friction at checkout, an opportunity Tebex saw to improve conversion for its creators.

2. Tackling friendly fraud

Chargebacks are a common challenge in gaming, particularly when parents dispute in‑game purchases made by their children. Tebex wanted to reduce the operational overhead caused by these cases and ensure creators kept more of what they earned.

3. Enhancing security and trust

Anonymity in online gaming opens the door to unauthorised payments. Tebex was looking for ways to strengthen verification and reduce Card-not-present fraud (CNP) fraud, without compromising player experience.

4. Reducing fees and operational costs

With a global audience, every percentage point matters. Card and PayPal transactions accrue costly intermediary fees, cross-border charges, and operational expenses from fraud and refunds. Tebex’s goal was to reduce these costs and pass more revenue back to the creators on its platform.

How is TrueLayer helping Tebex?

Tebex partnered with TrueLayer to roll out Pay by Bank across key European markets, offering players a faster, more secure way to pay while helping Tebex reduce costs and improve conversion.

We're leaning heavily into account to account payments and open banking because we see that as doing the same in payments, shifting the power away from the large card schemes and large wallets, and back towards merchants.

High performing payments across Europe

Tebex has launched Pay by Bank across multiple geographies, building an international payment method for its local player base. Pay by Bank has already grown its share of checkout without any discounts, prompts, or incentives. This early, organic adoption signals that players are not just willing to use it, they’re actively choosing it.

Driving higher-order values

Not only are players using Pay by Bank, but it’s the highest-value payment method at checkout. Transactions made via Pay by Bank have an average order value 140% higher than those made with cards. This is due to Pay by Bank’s higher payment acceptance rate, indicating trust and strong alignment with Tebex’s most engaged spenders.

As Liam puts it: "We didn't expect to see such a significant uplift in ATV (AOV) from pay by bank, but now that we have, it's quickly becoming a core part of our strategy to grow per transaction spend.”

Reducing reliance on legacy providers

One of Tebex’s priorities was to reduce dependency on outdated payment methods like SOFORT and PayPal, especially in Germany and other key European markets. Since rolling out Pay by Bank, SOFORT usage in Germany has halved, showing clear migration toward a more modern, user-friendly option

Putting more money in the creators’ pockets

By cutting out unnecessary intermediaries and costly card fees, Pay by Bank allows Tebex to pass savings directly to creators. For every transaction completed via Pay by Bank, Tebex can credit creators with an extra 1%, helping them retain more of their hard-earned revenue.

We didn't expect to see such a significant uplift in ATV (AOV) from pay by bank, but now that we have, it's quickly becoming a core part of our strategy to grow per transaction spend.
